Katie Scales is a Consultant Nurse in Critical Care at Charing Cross Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in West London, the UK’s first Academic Health Science Centre.
The post provides outreach critical care support for acutely ill adults in ward areas. Katie has an extensive career in critical care nursing including neonatal intensive care, intensive over-night recovery, adult general and cardiac intensive care as well as cardiothoracic intensive care with transplantation. In 1989 she became Tutor to the ITU course at St Thomas’ hospital, London and went on to become a Lecturer in Intensive Care Nursing and Biological Sciences with the Nightingale Institute, King’s College London University.
In 1995 Katie returned to clinical practice taking up post as Senior Nurse Practice Development in the intensive care unit at Harefield Hospital, Middlesex. In 1997 she became Assistant Director of Nursing at the Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust, a post she held for 3 years before taking up a first wave Nurse Consultant post in July 2000. Katie has had a career-long interest in intravenous therapy and was a committee member of the RCN’s IV Therapy Forum for many years. She is a contributing author of two UK textbooks on IV therapy and publishes regularly in this field.
In her spare time, Katie works overseas with the London based children’s charity ‘Chain of Hope’ providing cardiac surgery for children in developing countries.
